The Ruff Report: Dogs and Surveys

Is your dog's name on the most unusual list?

Can you ever imagine yourself at the park calling out: "Sir Knuckles da Dragon, come here." Or how about "HotRod Whoofington, this way" or "Captain Underpants, stay!"

Well, some pet parents do just that every day, because those are the top three most unusual names that people have given to their pets, according to a survey by Veterinary Pet Insurance. To come up with those names, VPI had its employees select 50 unusual dog names from its 2013 database of more than 500,000 insured pets and then vote for the 10 most unusual names.

With a database of more than half a million insured pets, we came across some extremely peculiar dog and cat names,” said Curtis Steinhoff, VPI"s director of corporate communications. “After speaking with the pet owners from our top-ten lists, we found that there is a special meaning and story behind unusual monikers like Captain Underpants and Mama Pajama. Many pet owners treat their dogs and cats like a part of the family and these unique names help reflect that.”

Rounding out the top 10 unusual dog names in 2013 are: Stinky Monkey, Taco Salad, Dallas Cowdog, Hunk Heartbreaker, Ice Bingbing, Potato Chip and Bunny Money Dogg.

Jeffrey Un of Lynnwood, Wash., says he planned to name his new English bulldog Brutus but instead decided his dog should have a proper gentleman's name. "A friend suggested Knuckles, which was fitting because of his oversized paws," Un told VPI. "But he still needed that gentleman's name, so I added Sir to his name. Sir Knuckles just sounded odd to me so I added da Dragon. Lo and behold, Sir Knuckles da Dragon fits him perfectly."

Allison Manderino of Charles Town, Va., wanted to give the rescue dog she adopted from a shelter a unique name to go with his goofy and spunky personality, so she decided to consult with her brother. "My brother is very creative, and silly just like the dog," Manderino explained. "I asked what I should name this crazy dog and he laughed and suggested Captain Underpants. Of course he was joking. To his surprise, I said, 'I like it. We'll go with that.' "

Captain Underpants donates blood for sick and injured dogs every five to seven weeks, Manderino said. "He thoroughly enjoys his donations, filled with love from the technicians, and lots of treats. He has been a donor for over a year, and has likely saved many dogs' lives in the process. We are so proud to have a doggy lifesaver."

In 2012, the top-10 most unusual dog names were: Chew Barka, Nigel Nosewhistle, Sir Maui Senqkey Schwykle, Spark Pug, Agent 99, Stinker Belle, Vienna Sausage, Furnace Hills Dante, Senorita Margarita and Trigonometry.

Michele Manzelli of Chelmsford, Mass., says her family named their poodle Chew Barka, because of his behavior. “The first night we had him all he seemed to do is chew and bark, and being the Star Wars fans that we are, Chew Barka just seemed to fit perfectly,” she told VPI. “We call him Chewy for short and Mr. Chew Barka when we address him formally.”

Michele Thomas of Skillman, N.J., wanted to pay homage to her previous dog, Sidney, a West Highland white terrier who was known for the noises he would make when he was sleepy, so her family named their current dog Nigel Nosewhistle in his honor. “Sidney, would make whistling noises when he wanted to go to bed,” Thomas told VPI. “Nigel was the first name we called him, and it became Nigel Nosewhistle.”
In 2011, the top 10 unusual dog names were: Almost-A-Dog, Franco Furter, Stinkie Mcstinkerson, Sir Seamus McPoop, Audrey Shepburn, Dewey Decimell, Knuckles Capone, Beagle Lugosi, Shooter Mclovin and Uzi Duzi-Du.

In 2010, the top 10 unusual dog names were: Pickle Von Corndog, Lord Chubby, Bing Clawsby, Badonkadonk, Ninjastar Dangerrock, Molly Mcboozehound, Dog Vader, Flopsy Squeakerton, Bettie Poops, Geez Louise and Barnaby Bones.
In 2009, the top 10 unusual dog names were: Rush Limbark, Sirius Lee Handsome, Rafikikadiki, Low Jack, Meatwad, Peanut Wigglebutt, Scuddles Unterfuss, Sophie Touch & Pee, Admiral Toot and Spatula.

Bobbi Dobbler of Smock, Pa., explained her golden retriever's unique name, Sophie Touch and Pee. "Every time you would touch her, she'd get so excited you had to watch your shoes," Dobbler said.

Buena Silverman of Holicong, Pa., named her dog Rush Limbark after she noticed she appeared to enjoy listening to the conservative radio talk show host.

More reports about dogs and surveys:
"For many pet parents, naming a pet is an opportunity to express personal creativity," Steinhoff said. "We often highlight the popular names, but the truth is that the majority of pets have a unique name or a name shared by very few other pets."
