What
would the holiday season be without Santa, decorations and special
foods? It would be a lot safer for many curious dogs and cats,
according to a study of accidents involving pets.
The
holiday season has a tendency of bringing out the mischievous side of
many pets, resulting in some bizarre injuries, a study by Pets Best
Insurance has found. After reviewing its claims from policyholders,
the insurance company compiled a list of the five most bizarre
holiday accidents involving pets.
Food
and decorations are the main enticements that land pets in the

“The
holiday season is filled with trappings that people love - like
decorations, desserts and bustling crowds. Unfortunately, there are
many aspects of these celebrations that can threaten our pets,” Dr.
Stephens states in a media release. “We strongly encourage pet
owners to consider the safety of their curious and hungry animals
during any preparations with decorations and food.”

Here
are the five most bizarre holiday-related claims that Pets Best
insurance has handled:
- Laila, a 19-week-old Boxer puppy, who ate a glass ornament, resulting in an exam, X-rays and a hospital stay.
- Maggie, an 8-month-old Golden retriever, who swallowed a large piece of antler bone, resulting in surgery to remove the antler from her stomach.
- Sasha, a 3-year-old Shetland sheepdog, who devoured some bread dough, which expands in a pet's stomach and causes the organ to twist. The yeast in the dough also can cause alcohol poisoning. Sasha was given anti-nausea medication shots.
- Jasper, a 7-year-old mixed breed, decided to gorge himself on a Santa costume, including the suit’s fluffy stuffing. The subsequent trip to the veterinarian involved a gastrointestinal blood panel.
- Cooper, a 9-year-old mixed breed, chowed down a corncob, resulting in
emergency surgery to remove the item.
