The
never-ending battle to keep those pesky fleas and blood-sucking ticks
off your dog may have gotten a little bit easier for dog owners. The
U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a first-of-its-kind
oral medication that combats fleas and ticks for up to three months.
Bravecto, a chewable tablet made by Merck Animal Health, can be used
in place of the spot-on topical flea and tick products that pet parents have
relied on for many years. Most topical treatments are liquids that
are applied to a dog's skin, usually on the back in between the
shoulders.
According
to the FDA, fluralaner - the active ingredient in Bravecto - prevents
fleas for 12 weeks; treats and controls the brown dog tick, American
dog tick and deer tick for 12 weeks; and treats and controls the lone
star tick for 8 weeks. It requires a prescription from a veterinarian
for its use.
