Hoarder crams 300 dogs into old schoolhouse
About 300 feces-covered dogs stuffed into a poorly ventilated former schoolhouse by a hoarder have been rescued in southern Kentucky.
The dogs, which include breeds such as Basset Hounds and Labradors, are being cared for and rehabilitated by rescue groups throughout the state, according to a media release from the Humane Society of the United States.

"Despite the terrible ordeal that these dogs have been through, they are surprisingly resilient, and have already started warming up to their temporary caretakers," said Lorri Hare, director of the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society, which is caring for 125 of the pets. "With just a little bit of love and care, these animals have already begun transforming into the dogs they were always meant to be."
The Humane Society of the United States, the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society and United Animal Nations assisted in the rescue operation in the community of Columbia in Adair County.
Rescuers could smell the stench of ammonia before they entered the building, the HSUS said. Many dogs were emaciated and suffering from untreated medical conditions such as skin infections and parasites. An emergency shelter was set up at the Southern Kentucky Fairgrounds in Bowling Green to help care for the dogs. The dogs were treated by a team of veterinarians.
"Our volunteers have responded to similar cases around the country, so they are prepared to provide the emotional and physical care these dogs desperately need," said Diann Wellman, who is leading UAN's team of 11 specially trained emergency sheltering volunteers.
Pam Rogers, Kentucky state director for HSUS, said hoarding cases are more common than people realize. "This type of hoarding case happens all over the country," she said.
