Dog items made with goat's milk

A company has launched a line of products for dogs made from all-natural goat's milk.

Canus Goat's Milk, which has locations in Waterbury, Vermont, and Ville St.-Laurent, Quebec, makes treats that include goat's milk protein concentrate and goat's milk mineral whey designed for nutrition and easy digestion, the company states in a media release.

It also makes goat's milk shampoos - Goat's Milk Shampoo and Goat's Milk Shampoo Bar - that have a blue cedar fragrance and the moisturizing properties of goat's milk to clean dry coats and soothe itchy skin. Goat's milk shampoos produce a lather that makes them easy to use for cleaning areas like a dog's underbelly and paws.

Canus Goat's Milk makes seven varieties of soap and five kinds of body lotions.

Flavored water for pampered pooches

Dogs no longer have to settle for plain, old water.

They can now quench their thirst - and whet their taste buds - with peanut butter, parsley, lemongrass and spearmint water called Fortifido being distributed by Cott beverages, the Dayton Daily Times of Ohio reports.

"Dog just love peanut butter," Charles Calise, North American director of innovation for Cott Beverage, told the newspaper. "When we started putting (the water) down in front of dogs, they loved the stuff."

The bottled water for adult dogs has health benefits, too, because it is fortified with vitamins, Calise said. According to Cott Beverages, the peanut-flavored water has calcium for healthy bones; the spearmint-flavored is for fresh breath; the lemongrass-flavored has amino acids and minerals for healthy joints; and parsley-flavored has zinc for healthy skin.

Another company, Wisconsin-based Century Foods, offers Hero Enhanced Dog Water, which also is fortified with vitamins and supplements. It is available at PetSmart.

Jack Russell terrier cleaning company's new face

A 3-year-old Jack Russell terrier who can walk on his front paws, jump rope and run backward will be the new face on pet cleaning supplies sold nationwide.

Jesse, owned by Heather Brook of Litchfield Park, Arizona, is the winner of the grand prize in the pet games video contest sponsored by cleaning-supply company Bissell Homecare Inc., The Arizona Republic reports.

"I just got him because I wanted a dog," Brook, a 19-year-old student at Estrella Mountain Community College in Avondale, told the newspaper. "I never thought I'd be teaching him all these tricks."

Jesse will appear on packaging for Bissell's Lift-Off Revolution Pet Vacuum. The company also made a $10,000 donation to AZ Jack Russell Rescue Inc., a Gilbert-based nonprofit organization selected by Brook.

Jesse learning quickly, Brook said. His longest lesson, the hand stand, took one week for him to learn to get his balance right, she said.

Food maker touts new plant's safety standards

A pet food maker has opened $73 million manufacturing plant which is says uses new technology to detect and prevent contamination.

Royal Canin, which has opened the facility in Guelph, Ontario, says the plant will monitor raw ingredients with a Near Infrared Spectroscopy System. The system compares a 'fingerprint' or chemical signature of the ingredient to a computerized library of standards to ensure that no non-conforming raw materials get into finished products. The company also tests every raw material before it enters the plant and all finished products.

"This new facility represents the best in food safety, nutritional precision and quality," Xavier Unkovic, a Royal Canin Canada official stated in a media release.
